Live Zoom lectures will continue in 2024, with topics mainly based on exhibitions that are on in London over the period. The talks will take place on Friday mornings, from 10.00 until 11.30, with a lecture of 60-75 minutes, followed by Q&A and discussion. All sessions are now £13 per person per session, whether via Zoom or if you prefer to receive the recording afterwards.

2 February – Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Mackintosh began his career as an architect, creating masterpieces such as The Glasgow School of Art, as well as designing domestic interiors and Tea Rooms in Glasgow, alongside his talented wife, Margaret MacDonald. His perfectionism in design and the radical nature of his work would later create problems and he would leave his native Glasgow for France, turning from architecture to watercolour paintings and inhabiting the classic role of the misunderstood artist.
9 February – Travels with My Art – France. Initially following in the footsteps of Charles Rennie Mackintosh on his wanderings in France, this week will follow my own recent wanderings and the artworks to be enjoyed there. We begin in the French Pyrenees, moving on to nearby Céret and Collioure, both of which housed artistic colonies and nurtured the beginnings of Cubism and Fauvism respectively. We will also touch on the life and work of Camille Claudel, before consolidating it all with a look at the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in Troyes, in the North.
16 February – Impressionists on Paper (Royal Academy until 10 March). Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists in late 19th Century France radically transformed the direction of art, but not just through their paintings on canvas. The RA’s exhibition brings together 77 works on paper to illustrate the subtle but seismic shift they brought about, elevating the status of works on paper, be they drawings, pastels, watercolours, temperas or gouaches, from mere preparatory works, to artworks in their own right.
1 March – Entangled Pasts, 1768 to Now (Royal Academy 3 February to 28 April)
The RA’s exhibition stages a conversation about art and its role in shaping narratives of empire, enslavement and resistance, and how it may help set a course for the future. Artworks by leading contemporary British artists of the African, Caribbean and South Asian diasporas will be on display alongside works by artists from the past 250 years, creating connections across time that explore questions of power, representation and history.
8 March – John Singer Sargent
In preparation for a look at Tate Britain’s ‘Sargent and Fashion’ exhibition next week, this talk will explore the background of Sargent’s life and career, focusing on his arrival in London, following the scandal that greeted his ‘Portrait of Madame X’ in the Paris Salon of 1884. As well as the brilliance of his own artistic technique and his increasing dissatisfaction with society portraiture, we will look at the wider artistic milieu that he found himself in.
15 March – Sargent and Fashion (Tate Britain 22 February to 7 July)
With over 50 paintings on display, including major portraits that rarely travel, this exhibition gives an insight into Sargent ‘the stylist’, who used fashion to express the identity and personality of his sitters. Often choosing outfits or tweaking the look, he incorporated his own sartorial choices to express his vision in contemporary fashion, which still enthrals today. Several period garments will also be displayed alongside the portraits they feature in.
